Amy Lynn (Routhieaux) Hurrish

Amy Lynn (Routhieaux) Hurrish, 58, passed away at home on April 13th, 2025, with her family by her side after a courageous two-year battle with metastatic kidney cancer. Amy fought as hard as she could and ultimately won by entering eternal paradise.

Born August 15th, 1966, in Portsmouth, Virginia to Jim and Jean (Weycker) Routhieaux, Amy always had a magnetism to her. She graduated from West High School in 1984 and St. Norbert College in 1988, where she created strong friendships that would last her entire life. She and her husband Steven Hurrish were married on April 27th, 1991, and went on to have four children. From the time the kids were born, Jake, Maggie, Molly, and Gracie were at the forefront and center of everything they did.

Amy spent her children’s childhood years as a stay-at-home mom, which she called “the most important work of her life”. When the kids got older, Amy rediscovered her niche in food service and spent many enjoyable years employed at Bay Harbor Elementary and St. Bernard School, serving school children lunch. Amy had an admirable work ethic right up until the very end.

Amy was always content with the simple things in life. Nothing could beat an afternoon floating around the pool, a game of cards (— in which she didn’t often lose), a weekend boat ride in Door County, a power walk around the block, or a catnap with the family kitties. As long as there was good conversation to be had, and with her, there always was, Amy was enjoying herself. She cared much more about the ‘who’ rather than the ‘what’ of life.

Amy will always be remembered as being extremely generous, especially with her home. Both Amy and Steve opened their home to countless family gatherings, neighborhood parties, foreign exchange students, high school friends, babysitting families, stray pets, and more throughout the years. Amy lived up to her title, “the hostess with the mostest”—the party didn’t just come to her, Amy created the party.

She is survived by her husband Steven Hurrish; son Jake (Ciara); daughters Maggie (Dakota and Beau Tiller), Molly (Evan Bunker) and Gracie Hurrish; mother Jean Routhieaux; and brother Paul Routhieaux. She is further survived by mother-in-law Joan Hurrish; brother-in-law Tom (Ann) Hurrish; sister-in-law Carol VanVreede; nieces and nephews David (Katie) and Mark (Julie) Hurrish, Bryce (Noah) Van Hinz, Addie (Ryan Hansen) VanVreede, Nadia and Michael Routhieaux; and many beloved friends, aunts, uncles, & cousins.

Amy was preceded in death by her father Jim Routhieaux; father-in-law Gene Hurrish; grandparents Clyde and Gladys Weycker, Earl and Marie Routhieaux, and Rita Routhieaux; and many aunts and uncles.

A funeral for Amy will be held on Friday, May 2nd. Visitation will take place from 9:00–11:00 a.m. at St. Bernard Church, 2040 Hillside Lane, (the beloved school she served at), followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m. A celebration of life luncheon will be held from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Badger State Brewery.

The family would like to send a heartfelt thank you to Amy’s cousins Kelly Bergdoll & L’Rae Scherwinski, who fulfilled Amy’s ‘pinky promise wish’ of dying with peace and dignity, and for being such a strong sense of peace for the family.

Another expression of gratitude is sent to Heidi Colleran, Lynn Flynn-Gretz, Deb Moore, and Amy Utic, for their support and assistance in ‘simplifying life’ for Steve & the kids before Amy’s passing.

In lieu of flowers, the family will be “paying it forward” to the MaryKnoll Lay Missioners and to St. Bernard School, both organizations that were very close to Amy’s heart.
