Deborah (Debbie) Cherney passed away surrounded by family and friends on March 27, 2025, after a battle with ovarian cancer. Born on January 16, 1959, to Marlene (Goerl) and Gerald Baehler, Debbie was one of the kindest, most caring individuals. She was a born caregiver to all—children, patients, parents, friends, and coworkers all experienced her love. She was preceded in death by her loving parents and grandparents, and is survived by her spouse, James Cherney, and beloved children, Joel and Marla, and daughter-in-law Gena. She also leaves behind 5 siblings, numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews, and endless numbers of friends and coworkers.
Debbie graduated from nursing school in 1980 and spent 45 years as a registered nurse—serving and caring for others both in her personal and professional lives. She spent most of her career in Labor & Delivery and Obstetrics & Gynecology. Many, many people in the Green Bay area remember her and her kindness while bringing their children into the world.
Debbie especially loved gardening, flowers, and animals. In addition to tending her vegetable and flower gardens, Debbie spent hours with her fur-child, Cinnamon, and 2 fur-grandchildren. She also enjoyed spending time with family and friends and travelled as frequently as she could to attend important events. In 2023, she was blessed with the trip of a lifetime to China, where she met her daughter-in-law’s family and friends and experienced their culture.
It is impossible to quantify the impact Debbie made on those around her. Her care for everyone she met was obvious within minutes—she had a note on her care profile during her final months that noted that she was the sweetest, kindest, person, and that you would be blessed to meet her. Her light shined brightly in this world, and she will be deeply missed.
A celebration of life will be held in Debbie’s honor on April 5, 2025 from 1-4pm at Emmanual Lutheran Church (349 N Main St, Seymour, WI 54165). In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, the Green Bay Botanical Gardens, or your local animal shelter.
