On January 27, 2023, Helga H. Kmetz of Green Bay – known affectionately to her family as the “Prussian Princess” – moved on to heaven. Helga was born in Europe in the town of Tilsit, then part of East Prussia. After meeting Donald Burdon, an American soldier, they married and settled in Green Bay, WI., where Donald established Burdon’s Hill dairy farm. Helga then moved her parents, brother and grandmother from Europe to Wisconsin where they made a successful life.
Helga was a singular women, an excellent conversationist, loved to cook and made everyone laugh. Her zest for life was contagious. She studied ballet as a young girl and enjoyed all types of dancing, her occasional martini, and socializing. Above all Helga was a fighter and proud of her heritage and family. Helga is survived by her brother Burkhard Karr (Port Washington), daughter Susan Burdon, three granddaughters, and a great granddaughter. Helga's daughter Kristin Burdon preceded her in death in 2009.
The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Elsa Frank who has lovingly cared for Helga for many years, and also to Sherri, Tricia, Val and all the rest of the Rebekah Haven Assisted Living care staff who have been her family these past three years. The family also adds their admiration and appreciation for the outstanding Aurora Baycare medical team who cared for Helga in Room 347 until the end.
A Farewell service will be held on Wednesday, February 8, 2023 , at Malcore West Funeral Home, 1530 West Mason Street, Green Bay, from 1:00 to 3:00 PM.
A Celebration of Helga's life will be held at a later date.
