April 18, 1956 — July 13, 2021

Mary “Tick” (Gatz) Van Heuklon
April 18, 1956 – July 13, 2021

Born in Green Bay, WI on April 18, 1956 to Lloyd and Alice (Campbell) Gatz. She moved with her parents to Appleton, WI as a baby. She graduated from Appleton West High School, Class of 1975.

On August 10, 1976 she was united in marriage with the love of her life, Richard Van Heuklon. Their marriage was blessed with two sons, Nicholas born Oct 13, 1978 and Eric born July 2, 1980. Mary stayed home with the boys until they went to school all day. She babysat other children as playmates for her sons and helped pay the bills.

Mary worked as a nursing aid at a couple of nursing homes before her 25-year career at St. Elizabeth Hospital where she made a lot of great friends. During her career, she worked as a nursing aid, in patient transport, the storeroom, and the medical records department.

Always a hard worker, Mary had to take medical disability in 2012 due to complications from her cancer treatment in 2009. She never gave up fighting one health problem after another to be with the ones she loved. She was a generous and loving mother, sister, aunt, friend and wife.

She loved her many dogs, the flowers in her yard, making candy to gift to everyone during the holidays and was one of the world’s greatest football fans. Mary and Rick watched almost every game of every team of each season together. But, of course, the Packers were her favorite. In her retirement, she found a new joy in spending time with her great nieces. She also enjoyed making and gifting handmade crafts.

Mary is survived by her husband of 45 years Richard Van Heuklon. Sons, Nicholas (Genelle) Van Heuklon and Eric Van Heuklon (Celestia Soles). Her sister, Sue Ann (Kenneth) Salm. Nieces, Erin (Rob) Goad and Katie Notino. Great nieces, Delaney and Mackenzie Goad. In-laws, Marge Van Heuklon, Norma Sanderfoot, MaryAnn Grassl, Robert (Renae) Van Heuklon, Roger (Fiona) Van Heuklon and Nancy (Gilbert) Young. Along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her father-and mother-in-law Norman and Mary Louise (Kufner) Van Heuklon, aunts, uncles, niece Ashley Van Heuklon, and brothers-in-law Ken Sanderfoot and Ray Grassl.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Doctors and Nurses at St. Elizabeth hospital and Moments Hospice for their compassion and care.

There will be no service at this time. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held at a later date.
